Pharmacology

Adhatoda vasica

Vasica is most well-known for its effectiveness in treating respiratory conditions due to it’s anti-spasmodic and expectorant activities. It is extensively used for treating cold cough, whooping cough, chronic bronchitis and asthma, as mild sedative, expectorant and antispasmodic. In one the study, the cough suppressant actualy of A. vasica was 43.02% as compared to the actually of codeine sulphate. Both vasicine and vasicinone the primary alkaloid constituents of A. vasica are well established as therapeutical respiratory agents.

Pistacia integerrima

Expectorant properties of P. integerrima are quite effective to resolve the complications like cough, asthma, phthisis, irritability of the stomach. The ingredients of this herb help in clearance of mucus from airways, bronchi, lungs and trachea. Our study displays that P. integerrima possesses significant anti-asthmatic activity which may be attributed to reduction in TNF-α, IL-4, and IL-5 expression levels, and increase in AQP1 and AQP5 expression levels. Anti-asthmatic activity of extract galls may be due to the membrane stabilizing potential, suppression of antibody production and inhibition of antigen induced histamine release.

Hedychium spicatum

The rhizome of H. spicatum possesses potent anti-tussive and anti-asthmatic activities possible by anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and immunomodulator mechanisms. These effects are ascribable to the presence of non-polar volatile constituents majorly terpenoids. Studies reported that 10 mg of powdered rhizome daily dose in 25 patients was found useful in recurrent paroxysmal attacks of dyspnoea (bronchial asthma) and relieved completely in 4 weeks time.

Piper longum

The fruits of P. longum are very well-known remedy for diseases of respiratory tract, viz. cough, bronchitis, asthama etc. It is known to liquefy the thick cough and also helps in increasing bioavailability of active ingredients of other herbs in synergetic effects.
