Pharmacology

Cyperus rotundus

C. rotundus (Musta) is a stimulating and purifying herb for the blood and digestive tract. It strengthens and cleanses the liver, improving its blood purifying and bile producing functions

This in turn increases the appetite, and improves digestion and the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. Its rare combination of cooling, pungent, and stimulating energies makes it a wonderful digestive stimulant for Pitta constitutions, as it will strengthen digestion without contributing excess heat which is likely to aggravate Pitta.

Eclipta alba

The fresh juice of leaves is used for increasing appetite, improving digestion and as a mild bowel regulator. The larger quantity of food consumed following the stimulation of appetite is ably digested by the stimulant properties of E. alba.

Embelia ribes

E. ribes is used for managing many disorders of child including appetite loss. E. ribes is a digestive support and helps in the digestive fire. E. ribes is also used for curing flatulence, loose motions, indigestion, intense retching and depraved appetite.

Zingiber officinale

Ginger has been revered as a culinary and medicinal spice in many traditional cultures. It is also a very powerful herb with numerous proven health benefits. Evidence suggests that ginger consumption has anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, glucose-sensitizing, and stimulatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract.  The phenolic compounds in ginger have the properties to relieve irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. They stimulate saliva and bile production while allowing food and fluids to move through the GI tract smoother than normal.

Piper nigrum

P. nigrum stimulates the appetite and dispels gas from the intestines. Black pepper (P. nigrum) stimulates the taste buds in such a way that an alert is sent to to the stomach to increase hydrochloric acid secretion, thereby improving digestion. Black pepper has also been shown to have significant antioxidant and antibacterial properties, which are important for fighting disease and maintaining overall good health.

Anethum graveolens

Anethum is used as a kitchen ingredient and given to relieve colic pain in babies and flatulence in young children. The seed is aromatic, carminative, mildly diuretic, galactogogue, stimulant and stomachic. The essential oil in the seed relieves intestinal spasms and griping, helping to settle colic. The carminative volatile oil improves appetite, relieves gas and aids digestion.

Cuminum cyminum

In Sanskrit, cumin is known as Jira “that which helps digestion”. In the Ayurvedic system, dried cumin seeds are used for medicinal purposes such as to enhance the appetite, taste perception, digestion and strength.
