Pharmacology

Phyllanthus emblica

Amla also has an affinity for the urinary tract and balanced excretion of urine. The standardised extracts of P. emblica showed antimicrobial activity against often found pathogenic strains including antibiotic resistant strains against such as all the isolates E.coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. The effectiveness of the active compounds present in P. emblica also showed growth inhibition.

Tinospora cordifolia

T. cordifolia (Guduchi) is one of the most versatile rejuvenative Indian herbs. It is also called as “Nectar of Life”, as it is extremely useful in strengthening the immune system of the body and keeping the functions of its various organs in harmony. Various In-vitro studies showed that the extract of T. cordifolia reveal potent antibacterial activity against both uropathogenic isolates – Escherichia coli; and Staphylococcus aureus.

Curcuma longa

Turmeric is known for a number of medicinal properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immune-stimulatory etc. These properties are inflicted on turmeric by a variety of biological compounds such as Curcuminoids, Vitamins (B & C), Sodium, Potassium, Iron, Proteins, α-Linolenic acid, Essential oils etc. These compounds inhibit the bacterial growth by damaging the cell membrane of the bacteria, resulting in their death. Curcumin is found to prevent assembly of a protein FtsZ (involved in bacterial cell division) which leads to inhibition of the growth.
