Ocimum sanctum

Tulsi is also known as “the elixir of life” since it promotes longevity. The extract of leaves is used for prevention and cure of many illnesses and everyday ailments like common cold, headache, cough, flu, fever, sore throat etc. It also helps to mobilize mucus in bronchitis and asthma.

Solanum surattense

The plant has been reported beneficial in the treatment of asthma and chronic bronchitis. In a clinical study, it was reported that oral administration of S. xanthocarpum at a dose of 300 mg dry powder thrice a day for 3 days found to be very effective to controlling mild to moderate bronchial asthma and the bioactivity is equivalent to that of administration of 200 mg of deriphylline.

Terminalia bellerica

T. bellerica has been used as a “health-harmonizer” and plays a vital role in management of respiratory conditions, including respiratory tract infections, cough, and sore throat. The water-soluble macromolecule of T. bellerica demonstrated strong antitussive activity.

Glycyrrhiza glabra

G. glabra is one of the most commonly used medicine in Indian indigenous system of medicine. It is used as an energy tonic and used for asthmatic coughs, as an antispasmodic and ulcer remedy, and to cool ‘hot’ conditions. The extract exerts a significant antitussive effect as cough suppressant activity of G. glabra was 35.62% as compared to codeine sulphate. The result provides pharmacological evidence in support of the folklore-claim of G. glabra as an antitussive agent.

Hedychium spicatum

The rhizome of H. spicatum possesses potent anti-tussive and anti-asthmatic activities possible by anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and immunomodulator mechanisms. These effects are ascribable to the presence of non-polar volatile constituents majorly terpenoids.
