Pharmacology

Cissus quadrangularis

C. quadrangularis is an indigenous medicinal plant, grown in India, which helps to increase healing process of fractured bone. C. quadrangularis helps in reducing pain, swelling, and fracture mobility and accelerate the healing of fracture jaw bones. C. quadrangularis reduces bone resorption primarily by downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines that are often increased after ovariectomy. The beneficial effects of C. quadrangularis are probably due to the flavanoids present. Although the mechanism(s) by which C. quadrangularis attenuates ovariectomy-induced bone loss has to be studied, C. quadrangularis is one of well-established herb to existing medication for the reversal of postmenopausal bone loss.

Trigonella foenum graceum

C. quadrangularis and T. foenum-graecum (fenugreek) plant parts are used for fracture healing in traditional medicine. Both the herbs together significantly improved trabecular histomorphometric parameters, viz. BMD, percent bone volume, trabecular number, trabecular separation, connection density. Cortical mean total cross-sectional bone area, cross-sectional thickness, mean total cross-sectional tissue area were comparable to the vehicle-treated group. C. quadrangularis and T. foenum-graecum combination therapy showed a marked improvement in bone microarchitecture and therefore, also given together as a potential alternative medicine to insulin for prevention of type I diabetes induced osteopathy.

Withania somnifera

W. somnifera extract promotes bone strengthening and prevents bone loss and osteoporosis. It also reduces bone damage due to stress and inflammation and therefore, aids in bone healing and forms new bones. In one of the In vivo study, W. somnifera markedly prevented the adverse changes in Ovariectomized (OVX) rats and thus proposed as potential agent in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Pearl Oyster calyx

Scientists studying the health benefits of pearl oyster powder have found that a special substance it contains—called nacre—is able to cause the regeneration of fibroblasts and osteoblasts, which are essential to the formation of new skin, collagen, and bone tissue. Osteoblasts are stem cells responsible for new bone formation and regrowth. Scientists also discovered that inserting the nacre caused an increased mineralization of the sheep’s bone, which means that the bone surrounding the cavity actually became stronger.

Another one of pearl oyster benefits is that it is one of the richest sources of calcium on the planet—up to 80% or more by weight. A human clinical trial show that pearl oyster powder is absorbed twice as efficiently as conventional calcium carbonate supplements (by far the most common form of calcium in dietary supplements).

Zinc calyx

In bone metabolism, Zinc is needed to produce the matrix of collagen protein threads upon which the bone-forming calciumphosphorus compound is deposited. It’s also necessary for the production of enzymes that degrade and recycle worn-out bits of bone protein. Proper calcium absorption also depends on zinc, and a deficiency prevents full absorption of calcium. It’s essential for bone healing, and increased amounts are found at the sites of bone repair. Low levels in the body have been closely linked with osteoporosis.
